Breaking New Frontiers
In the summer of 1803 President Thomas Jefferson assigned Captain Meriwether Lewis the task of exploring the newly purchased Louisiana Territory, a vast expanse of land that doubled the size of the country with the stroke of a pen.
Command of this Corps of Discovery was jointly shared by Lewis and Captain William Clark, a friend and fellow Virginian.
The success of Lewis and Clark's mission opened the great west to expansion and embodied the highest ideals of the U.S. Army and of the American spirit.
